Do you have pain in the jaw, ear or around the temples, clicking or grinding when you move your jaw, or intense headaches around the temples? You might have temporomandibular disorder, also known as TMD. TMD can also cause your jaw to lock or give you difficulties when trying to open your mouth. The jaw is a crucial part of oral health, and TMD can cause a whole host of difficulties that affect our patients’ lives. For some patients, the pain can become near-debilitating. That’s why we’ve invested in training and techniques that can help our patients living with TMD.
In the majority of cases, TMD symptoms are caused by a misalignment in the jaw due to irregular bites. We can therefore help our patients find long-term relief and improve their bite with bite reconstruction treatments. Other treatment options include occlusal splint therapy and sleep apnoea appliances.
Schedule a ConsultationFor many patients, their TMD will be caused by having an irregular bite, which means their TMD can be treated with bite reconstruction treatment. At Arte Dental, we’re able to carry out bite reconstruction through full mouth rehabilitation treatments.
With this, we take a completely comprehensive view of the mouth and jaw, in some cases using a variety of different reconstructive treatments to transform the bite, teeth, and smile of the patient.
If you have TMD, then you might also be dealing with sleep apnoea. Sleep apnoea is a condition whereby your breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep. This can make for a bad night’s sleep, with loud snoring and frequent waking. It can also lead to other issues, such as an increased risk of cardiovascular issues and type 2 diabetes. For some time now, we’ve known that there is a link between TMD and sleep apnoea.
A high percentage of patients with TMD also report issues with their sleep. For this, we can recommend sleep apnoea appliances which keep your jaw in the correct position. This keeps your airway open, making for a much better night’s sleep with no interruptions.
Occlusal splints are designed to help reposition and relax the jaw and must be custom-fit and made to be effective. Also referred to as ‘night’ or ‘bite guards’, these devices protect the teeth while also providing relief from pain, especially at night.
They will stop teeth grinding and jaw clenching from occurring, and can help alleviate pressure on the jaw. In some cases, we can also use them to adjust the bite of the patient. Improving the bite position can lead to better long-term jaw health and can, in some cases, completely alleviate chronic jaw pain and other issues caused by TMD.
During your consultation, we’ll conduct a thorough examination of your mouth and jaw. We may take X-rays to determine the exact issue, and from there, we will provide a diagnosis.
Once your diagnosis of TMD has been confirmed, we’ll develop a personal treatment plan with you. To that end, we’ll take your specific oral health needs into account and build a plan that is most appropriate for you.
You’ll start your treatment and hopefully soon experience long-term relief from TMD pain.
