Schedule a ConsultationReceding gums can often occur as we age and can cause the teeth to appear longer than normal, especially when smiling. It can also lead to oral health issues, such as increased sensitivity as the root is more exposed, and a greater risk of gum disease and infection.
To improve your gum health and the appearance of your smile, you might want to consider gum grafting. This can be done in several ways, the most common of which is with a connective tissue graft. For this, a small amount of soft tissue from the roof of the mouth is removed and grafted onto the area around the exposed root.
If you have a ‘gummy smile’, it will be because your teeth appear shorter and smaller, allowing for more gum to be on show. Some patients are happy to embrace this, but if your gummy smile has stopped you from smiling in photos or laughing in public, then the team at Arte Dental can help.
To treat a gummy smile, we will carefully remove the excess gum and extend the surface of the teeth. This makes the gums less noticeable, allowing your smile to appear fuller and more even. This treatment can sometimes also be necessary in order to place a crown or apply composite bonding.
A gingivectomy involves the removal of gum tissue. This is often done to treat gum disease, but we can also perform it to improve and enhance a smile. Excess gum tissue can cause issues with your oral health, as it can make oral hygiene harder to maintain.
It can also cause dissatisfaction with the aesthetic finish of your smile. With a gingivoplasty, we can reshape the gum tissue around the teeth, and this is usually done for cosmetic reasons on patients with a higher gum-to-teeth ratio. Gingivoplasty will leave the smile looking more natural and symmetrical for a much more pleasing finish. It can also be used in some cases where the patient has experienced gum recession.

Also known as gingivitis, gum disease is caused by infection in your gums and other surrounding support structures. If left untreated, it can become chronic.
The most common cause of gum disease is plaque buildup, usually a result of poor oral hygiene. Gum disease can be easily prevented and stopped in its early stages by following a good oral health routine at home and by visiting the dentist and hygienist regularly.
Aside from aesthetic concerns, it’s important to treat gum disease because if left untreated, it can advance to periodontitis, which is much harder to treat. Ultimately, it can lead to a loose tooth or teeth, and even tooth loss or the need for a tooth extraction.
A good oral health routine of brushing your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes and flossing regularly, as well as visiting the hygienist and dentist for regular check-ups, can help prevent gum disease from occurring.
